Co-ops Build a Better World: Co-operatives & Food Security
The United Nations declared 2012 the International Year of Co-operatives, highlighting the contribution of co-ops to food security, economic development and employment. This panel, presented at CT-NOFA's Winter Conferece in 2012, explores how co-ops — including food co-ops, farmer co-ops, worker co-ops and credit unions — are building a thriving regional economy in New England.

The 6th Principle of Co-operation recognizes that "co-operatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the co-operative movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures." And yet, co-ops rarely take advantage of opportunities to work together across sectors to grow our businesses, benefit our members, and influence policy makers. Our panel will describe successful examples of collaboration in New England, Seattle and Austin, and the strategies that made them work.
