POSITION: GENERAL MANAGER
REPORTS TO: Board of Directors President
SUPERVISES: GreenStar Management Team; oversees entire staff of roughly 200 employees
GreenStar Cooperative Market is a dynamic and growing, yet well-established retail food cooperative comprising three locations located in Ithaca, NY. GreenStar’s newly renovated 30,000-square-foot flagship store opened in May 2020. This along with two satellite locations account for total co-op sales around $24 million per year. We are cooperatively owned by over 12,000 member-owners and take pride in opening our doors to everyone in the community. GreenStar is a living wage employer.
The General Manager is responsible for the successful overall management and operation of GreenStar Cooperative Market Inc. in accordance with its core mission (Ends) and cooperative values. This includes strategic planning, board relations, financial operations, human resources, leadership, contracts and compliance, public relations, cooperative governance support, and other responsibilities related to effectively leading the Co-op. This position upholds the Co-op’s standards through effectively developing and supporting GreenStar’s management team and staff, implementing efficient and productive operating systems, demonstrating stellar leadership, and being accountable for financial performance, all in a manner that demonstrates GreenStar’s values and cooperative identity. The General Manager is also responsible for reporting to, and supporting the activities of, the Board of Directors (Council) and governance, in general. GreenStar’s Council practices Policy Governance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide logistical and administrative support to Council. Ensure that the cooperative’s ends are clearly communicated and upheld. Advise and inform Council on current operations, including potential opportunities and threats. Attend all Council meetings and other committee meetings as necessary, and provide monitoring reports and other pertinent information to Council in a timely manner.
Customer and Member Experience
Ensure the organization provides an inviting store atmosphere and excellent member-owner and shopper experience that promotes our cooperative advantage.
Take a lead role in proposing and developing the organizational strategy. Develop and create tactical plans, goals, and objectives that align with GreenStar’s mission and Ends. Develop the annual business plan, and guide department managers in developing and achieving specific plans for their departments.
Direct store operations, information technology, marketing, human resources, and finance. Represent the Cooperative with lawyers, landlords and in cooperative settings. Develop and implement policies and procedures to achieve operational excellence, marketing success, and employee development. Oversee the development of store merchandising programs and ensure that product selection is innovative and meets customer needs and product guidelines. Establish and monitor the facilities’ safety and security practices.
Ensure the fiscal stability of the organization, including budget preparation and control of capital and operational expenditures, and oversight of the organization’s accounting and financial management. Set and attain growth and profit targets.
Contracts and Compliance
Represent the Co-op in negotiating loans, leases, and contracts. Maintain existing contractual obligations and obtain favorable terms for new contracts. Oversee compliance with all regulatory bodies.
Employee Management and Development
Oversee Human Resource’s development of clear expectations and accountability measures for staff. Promote and sustain a pleasant, can-do, and amicable atmosphere within the store. Maintain compliance with GreenStar’s Standards of Conduct and ensure safe handling of any violations of these standards.
Required Skills and Experience
5+ years of experience in retail grocery, supply chain, distribution, or similar environment. Preference will be given to candidates with upper-level management experience in the cooperative grocery industry. Expertise in POS and other industry specific software preferred. BA in management or related field, MBA preferred. Excellent and demonstrated supervisory, management, delegation, and training skills. Excellent and demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills. Desire and ability to enhance the Co-op’s presence in the community, support its employees to reach their full potential, and create a positive and fulfilling membership environment for its 12,000 member-owners.
